Office/Sewing Room Makeover – One Room Challenge – Week 3

WEEK 1 || WEEK 2 || WEEK 3 || WEEK 4 || WEEK 5 || WEEK 6

Ah, it is week 3 of the One Room Challenge and I am starting to see the light at the end of the feature wall (get it?).

If you haven’t been following along on this challenge, check out my Week 1 and Week 2 posts. Week 1’s post will give you all of the information on what the One Room Challenge is and what my plans are from start to finish and on Week 2, I dive in a little deeper when I finally choose a feature wall paint colour and get the ball rolling.

I have to say I am pretty happy with the progress on this re-design. From feature wall paint colours to furniture and overall layout of the room, everything seems to be coming together nicely.

I am currently waiting on the desk chairs to arrive along with the rug.

Here is a reminder of the rug that I purchased from RugsUSA

The original desk chairs that I wanted to order were from Article, but when I went to place the order it said they would not arrive until August!! So, I started my search elsewhere for some mid-century modern desk chairs. To my pleasant surprise, I found some chairs that I quickly fell in love with on Wayfair. At $195 CDN (Only $119 USD) for a set of two chairs, the price could not be beat. Here are the Barroso Solid Wood Dining Chairs that I found on Wayfair.

I am really excited for these chairs to arrive, they have really good reviews and I think they are going to look great!

Now that you are able to visualize what the desk chairs are going to look like, take a look at the progress I have made in the office thus far. Below is the feature wall and the partial desk.

One of the biggest dilemma’s I faced this past week was the desktop. I originally wanted to buy the Karlby Countertop from IKEA to act as the desktop but I just could not justify the price of it. So, I thought I would attempt a D.I.Y and buy a plank of wood to stain on my own. After hitting every hardware store near me I was disappointed to find that the planks of wood they had were either not the right sizes, or cheaper wood that would warp over time. I was officially stumped.

Late last night when I was getting ready for bed, a brilliant idea that I had hiding in my head somewhere popped out. I could buy the IKEA Linnmon tabletop and purchase some wood adhesives to apply to the laminate. I haven’t ever worked with adhesives and I am not sure exactly where to buy them other than Amazon, but I am determined. Not only is this cost effective, but if it turns out, it is going to look great and last a long time. No warping of the “wood” over time – because it won’t be real wood!

Below is a list of what I have left to do:

  • Buy and cover the desktop
  • Buy floating shelves for the feature wall above the desk
  • Layout the rug when it arrives
  • Put together the chairs when they arrive
  • Decorate the shelving unit and the floating shelves
  • Shop for curtains
  • Create a layout for the gallery wall
  • Purchase a round mirror for the wall directly across from the window so it helps bounce off the natural light

Below is my original to do list. I have crossed off the ones that are done and I am removing some things from this list as well:

To do list:

  • Paint the walls
  • Replace the blinds
  • Buy a new desk with drawers
  • Dual desk space
  • Buy extra drawers for storage space – MIGHT NOT NEED THIS
  • Re-arrange the layout
  • Change the closet door handle – NO LONGER CHANGING THIS
  • Purchase a rug
  • Add some greenery
  • Create a proper gallery wall to display her favorite family photos
  • Make space for her sewing machine somewhere by the window so she has natural light to work with
  • Donate any items in the room she no longer uses
  • De-clutter

Thanks for checking in this week and following along on my One Room Challenge. If you like to follow along on these journeys, be sure to check out all of the talented designers participating in this event.

Be sure to check back next week for another update on this room!
