ORC – Office/Sewing Room Makeover – One Room Challenge – Week 1

WEEK 1 || WEEK 2 || WEEK 3 || WEEK 4 || WEEK 5 || WEEK 6

Hey guys! I came across the One Room Challenge (ORC) on Instagram a couple of weeks ago and unknowingly signed myself up and got an email approval for this Springs ORC ! This is super exciting for me because it sounds like so much fun and I love that it not only puts you to the test with timelines, but it also helps build this design community we have here on social media. I can’t wait to see what other designers are joining in on this ORC.

For those of you that don’t know what the One Room Challenge is, it is a 6 week “challenge” where you start and complete a one room re-design project. This challenge brings supportive individuals together during their re-decorating process. The ORC is currently on its 15th season and is a widely anticipated bi-annual event that happens every April and October.

The ORC selects 20 Design Influencers to be their featured designers, where they will post their design journey once a week for 6 weeks. In addition to this, anyone with a blog or Instagram account is welcome to join along and post on their social media platforms about their ORC’s.

I don’t really have a room of my own that I am ready to start re-designing. I am planning on fixing up my bedroom, but I am not ready to dive into that quite yet. Maybe I will do this for the Fall ORC?

Anyways, back to the Spring ORC, my Grandma has been asking me to re-decorate her office/sewing room, and I have a temporary plan for this space ready to go. So, I decided that this was going to be my One Room Challenge!

The budget for this room is $800 (Canadian) and while it could be tough, I think we can do it!

To do list:

  • Paint the walls
  • Replace the blinds
  • Buy a new desk with drawers
  • Dual desk space
  • Buy extra drawers for storage space
  • Re-arrange the layout
  • Change the closet door handle
  • Purchase a rug
  • Add some greenery
  • Create a proper gallery wall to display her favorite family photos
  • Make space for her sewing machine somewhere by the window so she has natural light to work with
  • Donate any items in the room she no longer uses
  • Declutter

Here are some photos of the office in its current state. I blurred out the photos on the walls because they are photos of family members and I did not want to post their faces online without their permission!

Brace yourselves for this one, this space has become a dumping ground for everything that does not have a home! It is time for some serious TLC!

End Goal

The end goal is to create a welcoming space that she enjoys being in. A place that she can Skype call her family in Italy and be comfortable showing off her home. Somewhere she can go to relax, read a book or sew on her beautiful sewing machine.

I am so torn on the direction I want to go on with this project. Part of me wants to keep this a chic modern design, but then the other part of me wants to go the Mid-Century Modern route. I guess we will see in the coming week what I decide to do!

Here are some inspiration photos of what I would like the space to look like.

By this time next week I hope to accomplish the below:

  • Empty the room
  • Chose a paint colour
  • Complete my concept design board.

I will be posting on my Instagram stories throughout this journey, showing you guys some tips and tricks I have up my sleeve and giving some sneak peeks of what is to come!

Wish me luck on this 6 week journey as I join many talented designers on the One Room Challenge!
